What is my cat trying to tell me? Bunting
When cats “head butt” you or rub their chin or cheek on you, they are rubbing their scent glands on you. This behaviour is sometimes referred to as “bunting”. This is an affectionate and social behaviour that they may also do with cats and other pets they have a friendly relationship with.
Cat’s scent glands release pheromones which are an important means of communication between cats. They also rub their head against objects in their environment as a way of marking territory and letting other cats know it belongs to them.
When your cat “bunts” you, they may be claiming you, but are also showing you affection or trying to get your attention for a specific need like getting their breakfast!! Bunting can also be used by cats as a self soothing behaviour.
So if your cat “bunts” you this usually means they like and trust you. If your cat doesn’t “bunt” you this doesn’t mean they don’t like you and their are other ways a cat can show you they love you (more to come in another post!)
